It's Fathers Day and we're all up in Pasadena checking out the 2018 Pasadena Chalk Festival. Ruston and I worked hard to finish everything up on Saturday. Thankfully when we came back on Sunday it had survived the night unscathed!

Check out the time-lapse of us creating Herbie.

2018 Pasadena Chalk Festival - Saturday Day 1 2018-06-17

It's the 26th Annual Pasadena Chalk Festival! You know where I'm going to be this weekend, right?
This is our fourth year participating, having spent previous years making murals of Ducktales, The Iron Giant, and The Jungle Cruise poster.
Ruston and I trade off each year being team captain. This year it's Ruston's choice, and inspired by the 50th anniversary of The Love Bug (December 1968) and Allison Lefcort's amazing painting, we set off to recreate Herbie in chalk on the pavement.

2018 Pasadena Chalk Festival - Thursday Check-in and Artist Party 2018-06-14

It's nearing Father's Day, which means it's almost time for the 2018 Pasadena Chalk Festival. The festival itself is celebrating its 26th year, and Ruston and I are celebrating our 4th year as artists.
As artists, everyone can check in on Thursday and choose the spot they'll use over the weekend. Normally this would be a job for Ruston, but today I was able to get off work early and make the drive up to Pasadena in time!

Michigan - Ethan's Birthday - 2018/05/25

Time for our next adventure. It's Memorial Day weekend and we've got a few things planned. First up, we're flying to Michigan to celebrate Ethan's 16th birthday! The kids are all ready to go.

Sunday, June 10, 2018

Today we're celebrating Phineas and Ferb at Disneyland! Specifically Perry the Platypus. My hat is just an ordinary platypus. They don't really do much. But Ian is wearing Special Agent P. Very nice.

Alli chose a princess hat, specifically Rapunzel. She really liked the long hair. After Luigi's broke down (no surprise there), we found ourselves on Mater's Junkyard Jamboree.

Sampling 17 different M&M flavors including the 3 new ones

M&M recently introduced 3 brand new flavors and invited everyone to vote on their favorites. It was fun tasting all the new peanut M&M flavors last year, so of course we'll be sampling whatever new flavors we can this year.
Finding the flavors proved difficult initially, taking Theresa and I to 4 different stores and only finding 1 kind. Eventually we found all three flavors and decided to take this show on the road. We were traveling to Michigan and thought it would be a lot of fun to sample them with people and discuss our favorites.
And then Theresa said "We should try other flavors too." Heh. She might end up regretting that...

Once we arrived in Michigan, the local Meijer (grocery store) had so many different kinds of M&Ms it was ridiculous. Of course we have to try them all!
There's 17 different flavors here including, Plain, Peanut, 50% Dark Chocolate, 49% Dark Chocolate Peanut, Crispy Mint, Dark Chocolate Mint, Peanut Butter, Pretzel, Crispy Espresso, Coffee Nut (last year's winner), Crispy, Almond, Crispy Raspberry, Minis, Caramel, White Chocolate, and Strawberry Nut.

WDW Sunday Dapper Day at Epcot - 11/19/17

Digging back into the archives and continuing an old trip repot. Back in November our whole family went out to Florida to visit Disney World.
It's hard to believe that it was just a week ago Theresa, Ian, Alli, and I were celebrating Dapper Day at Disneyland. Now we're in Florida celebrating again! My family is recycling our costumes from last week, bounding as Woody, Jessie, Buzz, and a Little Green Man. Continuing the Pixar theme, Jacob came as the evil emperor Zurg, the sworn enemy of the Galactic Alliance. My Mom and Dad are bounding as Luxo Jr and the Luxo Ball (Pixar Ball) from the Pixar Short Luxo Jr.

Disneyland with Daddy

Theresa was busy today, but there's no reason why I can't take the kids to Disneyland solo. T packed everyone a snack bag, we loaded in the car, drove to Disneyland, waited 15 minutes to park, and then walked through Downtown Disney to get to the park. First up is California Adventure.
Alli picked out our hats for today. I've got a great Jafar hat. I was surprised how much positive attention it got today. Lots of people loving the hat. And when people saw that Ian's hat was the Genie, he got a lot of positive comments too. I had no Jasmine hats, Alli settled for a princess hat. In this case Princess Minnie.

Ian turns 42

Forty two inches! It wasn't even a year ago that he hit the 40" line. Now he's up to the next big level for Disney rides!
According to the Disneyland website, there are 5 brand new things he can do now that he's topped that mark.

  • Goofy's Sky School
  • Grizzly River Run
  • Redwood Creek Zip Line
  • Redwood Creek Rock Wall
  • Matterhorn

Pixar Fest - Celebrating Nemo and Dory

Pixar Fest is in full swing and the kids are certainly getting into it. Last week when we visited, they wanted caramel apples from Marceline's Confectionary. I promised we'd get one our next visit. This morning Ian reminded me that we were getting caramel apples today from the parks. Good memory buddy.

Hawaii 2018 - Day 3 and 4

Day 3 in Hawaii started as many of our days ended up starting. Getting to the pool before anyone else and enjoying having it all to ourselves. Ian worked on swimming without him float vest and Alli enjoyed splashing around.

Hawaii 2018 - Day 1 and 2

It's spring break! This year, like last year, we're headed to Hawaii with Theresa's family. I know I'm way late getting some past Trip Reports finished, but this is still fresh in my memory and hopefully easier to write.

Practicing for the 2018 Pasadena Chalk Festival

The Pasadena Chalk Festival is only a couple months away and Ruston and I always like to get in at least one practice day. Each year we rotate who gets to pick, and this year it's Ruston's choice. We're doing the original Love Bug himself, Herbie!

Pixar Fest at the Disneyland Resort

This weekend kicks off Pixar Fest at the Disneyland Resort! It runs all the way until Sept 3rd, 2018, so we've got plenty of time to see it all. The first PIXAR themed hats we're wearing are from Monsters Inc.! Sulley is from Tokyo Disneyland, Mike is from Disneyland, the Monster University hat from a halloween costume, and hardhat from Disney On Ice.

Exploring the Adventureland Suite at the Disneyland Hotel

Last Friday, Theresa, the kids, and I all headed to the Disneyland Resort to meet up with the Wazny family and celebrate Matt's 40th birthday! They've come to Disneyland to celebrate and to top off a great week at the park, they're staying in the amazing Adventureland Suite inside the Disneyland Hotel! And they invited us to come join them for a birthday celebration!

What better hats to wear than our Disney Jungle Cruise helmets. There's Pooh, Mickey, and Tigger. And I didn't know when I'd be able to get my Giraffe hat out, but this seems like a good time. It's an official Disney hat from the Animal Kingdom.

2018 Minnie's Moonlit Madness Results

After having a really fun time participating in Minnie's Moonlit Madness 2018 #minnies2018 everyone was really excited to find out our score. This year, we had a really good run. We attempted all 10 hard clues, answered all the bonus clues possible, and did pretty good on trivia! On Thursday February 22nd, the results were in! They were posted on the internal Disney Backlot page first, so Ruston was the first to find out.

Ruston called Jacob, Theresa, and myself all on a conference call and asked if we wanted to hear the good news or the bad news. We opted to hear the bad news first.
"Well" Ruston said, "The bad news is that you're going to have to take some time off work to come up to the Disney Studios. Because the good news is that we won first place and they're going to take our picture and present the team with our medals!"

We won!
Woo hoo! Congratulations team! Everyone was really excited!

And boy was it a tight race. According to the scores above, our score was 1794. If you remember in my write-up, as the winners of the CHOC auction, we received a bonus clue worth an unspecified number of points. Apparently that clue was worth 50 points. I was happy to have the points, but that's not how I wanted to win. Thankfully even without those 50 points, we still would have had 1744 points which was still enough for a first place finish!

So what's the breakdown?

144 points from trivia - 50 questions worth 3 points each. We missed 7 questions, but got the double or nothing for the last 5 questions.
100 points from Clue A - We solved the scatter clue
1250 points from 10 hard clues - Each clue was worth 125 points and we solved them with 3 minutes to spare
100 points from the Newsies Bonus clue - Ruston and I worked on this clue while Jacob and Theresa walked us through the park to solve other clues
100 points from turning in our rope before time ran out
50 points for taking the bonus Snapchat photo with our team number visible
1744 points Total!

And in the end, it all came down to trivia. The top 3 teams solved all hard clues and earned all the bonuses possible. First place missed 7 trivia questions, 2nd place missed 13 trivia questions, and 3rd place missed 14 trivia questions. Whew! Tight race!

2018 Minnie's Moonlit Madness - An After Hours Scavenger Hunt around Disneyland

Once again, February has rolled around and it's time for Minnie's Moonlit Madness. An after hours scavenger hunt for Disney Employees and their friends, and a chance for top teams to put their knowledge of Disney trivia to the test.

Ruston, Jacob, Theresa and I all had a blast competing together as a team, all the way up until 2015 when the event got so popular that instead of requiring only 1 Disney Cast Member per team, they started requiring 2 Disney Cast Members per team. Our party of 4 only has one cast member, and with that, all our hopes for competing together again were gone.

Since then, I've had a blast being a volunteer for the event, seeing some of the behind-the-scenes work that goes into putting on an event like this. But there's nothing quite like competing...

Fortunately every once in a while, a little Disney Magic can happen.

Celebrating Valentines and the Lunar New Year at Disneyland

It's the weekend and we're celebrating at Disneyland. There's two holidays coming up this week, so we've themed our hats to match.
Alli and Theresa are sporting pink and red princess hats with hearts all over for Valentine's Day coming up on the 14th. Ian and I (and later Ruston) are wearing Pluto hats because on the 16th it's the Lunar New Year and this year is the year of the dog.
