Flowers family Christmas traditions

Our family is still pretty new, but we've already got some fun Christmas traditions. We've had some form of advent calendar for Ian for a couple years now, but this is the first year we've got a really nice one. Theresa found this calendar when we went to Bronner's Christmas Wonderland, the largest Christmas store in the world!

Both kids just love the advent calendar. We open it after T and I get home from work. Before when we'd get home Ian would come running and yell "Daddy!" Now he still comes running but says "Can we open the advent calendar now?" And if Alli could talk, I'm certain she'd be doing the same thing.

Theresa fills the inside with various treats and toys. Usually a small piece of candy or a cookie, and a little plush animal. They never fail to be a big hit.

She really wants up on the fireplace. Standing on her tiptoes and stretching to get up.

Alli, what are you doing?

Our next tradition happens right before bedtime each night. We always read books to the kids before they go to sleep, but during December they get to choose from a pile of wrapped up Christmas books. They unwrap it together and then we read it and a couple other Christmas books before heading off to bed. And while it would be nice to buy 25 Christmas books, instead we're just borrowing them from the Los Angeles Public Library. After Christmas they'll all head back to the library and we'll buy whichever ones end up being favorites for the kids next year.

And they both love the interactive books where they lift flaps on the pages to find various things.

Spiced Tea has been a holiday tradition in my family for as long as I can remember it. It's my Grandma's recipe and it just tastes like everything Christmas to me. I'm enjoying a steaming mug of it right now while I sit by the fireplace.
This year Ian helped out in the kitchen, counting out all the cinnamon sticks, pulling out tea bags, and measuring out all the other ingredients that go in to this tasty treat.
